County plans public input on county administrator selection

County SealSarasota County will hold five focus group sessions for public input on the characteristics and qualities that are important in a new county administrator. The meetings also will explore the opportunities for the county and the next administrator.

Waterways are subject of student photo exhibition

waterwayThe experiences of two Ringling College of Art and Design students who interned with Sarasota County Environmental Services will be chronicled in a new photo exhibition titled "Immersion - A photographic exploration of Sarasota's waterways," which will be on display Oct. 7 - Nov. 4 at the Sarasota Vineyard, 1528 Main Street, Sarasota. Change of Meeting Date and Guest Speaker

Hello Residents of Lake Sarasota:

On Tuesday, September 6, 2011 we will have our quarterly meeting of the Lake Sarasota Community Group. This meeting should be very interesting and informative. We will have a guest speaker, Joe O'Hara, who will speak to us about recent developments regarding the construction and widening of Bee Ridge Road. This is a subject that should be of interest to all of us who live in Lake Sarasota!

We would like to invite all Lake Sarasota residents to this meeting. Please come and bring any questions you may have about the future of Bee Ridge Road. Mr. O'Hara has been following the future of Bee Ridge Road and will be very informative.

We will also discuss our normal agenda items at this meeting.

Newtown community cleanup scheduled Saturday, Aug. 20

BroomsIt's time to clean out the garage and gather up yard waste and discarded household items. Sarasota County will hold its annual free community cleanup in the Newtown area from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. Dumpsters will be provided by Waste Management and will be available at three locations for materials from residents. There is no fee for disposal of items. (READ ON)
County seeks volunteers for Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 24

Coastal CleanupKeep Sarasota County Beautiful (KSCB) is seeking volunteers to help clean coastal and other areas during the 2011 International Coastal Cleanup from 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 24, at sites throughout Sarasota County. Venice's cultural campus to feature 'A Taste of Culture' food tour

Venice Community CenterIn most communities, if you wanted to experience history, art, great reading, limitless research opportunities and a multi-course dinner in one night, you would have to drive all over town, unless you are in Venice. At 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, the Venice Community Center will team up with its next-door neighbors -- the Venice Art Center, the Venice Archives and the Venice Library -- to host "A Taste of Culture," a walking educational tour of their facilities. Selby Children's Library will close temporarily during remodeling project

Selby LibraryThe $1.2 million remodeling of Selby Public Library, 1331 First St., Sarasota, is proceeding on schedule with the next phase to include the temporary closing of the Children's Library Aug. 19 - Sept. 2. While the Children's Library is closed, participants of children's programs are encouraged to attend similar activities and events at North Sarasota Library, Fruitville Library and Gulf Gate Library. Items reserved for pickup from the children's collection still will be available at Selby Library during this time frame. (READ ON)
