County Update: Fishing tournament, parks survey, more...

Dear Lake,
Welcome to Sarasota County's community e-newsletter. If you have questions, ideas for articles, or feedback on the system, contact us atcommunications@scgov.net
County commissioners and staff on Tuesday celebrated the opening of the new Landfill Gas to Energy Facility, the result of a unique public-private partnership that has environmental and economic benefits for
Sarasota County.
In order to promote water resources and the importance of safe, clean drinking water, Region X of the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association recently held its annual Best Tasting Drinking
Water contest.
Residents still have a chance to have their say about the future of parks, preserves and recreation services in Sarasota County over the next five, 10 and 20 years.
Sarasota County Commissioners unanimously agreed last week to rename Bay Island Park after former County Commissioner
Nora Patterson.
It's not uncommon to find shells on Sarasota County beaches, but did you ever wonder what they can tell us about the past?

Update: A Third SCAT Route Option going through Lake Sarasota

Further UPDATE: SCAT has provided a third option and this is now confirmed to be the one they will use:

Also: SCAT will notify neighborhoods along Bee Ridge when a decision is made about where Route #14 will end once the roadwork is completed. One possibility is for the bus to turn around at the Aberdeen roundabout, rather than continue to the Bee Ridge Extension.

SCAT has provided average daily ridership figures for Route 14, and the maps have been updated to more accurately reflect the current alternatives.

Note the final entry under the ridership figures:
And, most significant, indicating need to retain full service: Berkshire & Coleridge:  end of line:  32 & 28

Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) SCAT continues to serve Bee Ridge Road east of I-75 with our Route 14 and have been able maintain service through construction. We are now contacting you to request input from the Lake Sarasota community on a proposed detour that would start on or about August 1, 2015 and run through completion of road construction in April 2016. We look forward to your input.

SCAT has evaluated 2 options, both of which would impact the Lake Sarasota neighborhood (see attached maps):

Option 1 (preferred by SCAT) would use Mauna Loa, Brentford, Santo and Friendship in a one-way loop and add one temporary bus stop on Mauna Loa at Friendship/Bikini. SCAT would temporarily discontinue service on Bee Ridge Road east of Mauna Loa. Service would be restored on Bee Ridge Road when the road project construction is complete in April 2016 to Aberdeen. SCAT will discontinue service on Middlesex, Coleridge and Berkshire.

Option 2 would continue to use Bee Ridge Road east of Mauna Loa to Middlesex Place and then south to Mauna Loa. SCAT would continue to use the existing bus stop on Middlesex Place and ad one temporary bus stop on Mauna Loa at Friendship/Bikini. When the road project construction is complete in April 2016, SCAT will discontinue service on Middlesex, Coleridge and Berkshire.

SCAT has provided average ridership numbers for Bus #14 east and westbound -

Average Daily Boardings & Alightings:

Bee Ridge & Berkshire:  1 & 2
                   & Mauna Loa W/B:  9 & 1
                   & Mauna Loa E/B:  6 & 11
                   & Santo E/B:  3 & 3
                   & Westminster:  4 & 6
                   & Westminster (different stop):  3 & 9
Berkshire & Brentford:  7 & 2
And, most significant, indicating need to retain full service:
Berkshire & Coleridge:  end of line:  32 & 28

Times:

The bus would transit once an hour:

  • M-Sat 6:00am -10:00pm
  • Sun     8:00am -10:00pm

Thank you.

There is a Poll on Nextdoor.

Option 1: Brentford

Option 2: Mauna Loa -> Middlesex
