Sarasota County Update

Local agencies are working together to promote breastfeeding as a vital health activity for nursing mothers and infants and to recognize breastfeeding friendly agencies in honor of National Breastfeeding Month.
This is the last week to vote for Gulf Gate Public Library and Sarasota County beach pavilions, nominees in the Florida Chapter of the American Institute of Architects People's Choice Competition.
Walton Ranch Preserve in North Port and T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve in Venice are temporarily closed due to flooding, Sarasota County staff announced Wednesday, July 29.
A portion of Jackson Road in Venice will be temporarily closed to through traffic after county crews discovered a pipe failure Wednesday.
Residents from Sarasota, Longboat Key, Venice, North Port and the surrounding communities are invited to talk with leaders of the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County (DOH-Sarasota) and state HIV/AIDS program at the High Impact Prevention Town Hall meeting to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS on Thursday, Aug. 6 from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. at the William L. Little Health & Human Services Center, 2200 Ringling Blvd. (Auditorium), Sarasota.  
Sarasota County Emergency Management, the National Weather Service and the Glenridge on Palmer Ranch are teaming up to offer a free storm spotter training class on Friday, Aug. 7
The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County's (DOH-Sarasota) Health In Motion Mobile Medical Unit staff will provide free and low-cost public health services at 13 sites around the county during August. 
Access Sarasota is undergoing maintenance.  Local live meeting coverage will continue, but scheduled programming will be 
temporarily interruped.

Sarasota County's Procurement division has been honored for "Achievement of Excellence in Procurement" by the National Procurement Institute (NPI), an organization dedicated to establishing and developing efficient purchasing methods and practices in governmental, educational and institutional procurement. 
Sarasota County Commissioners recently approved a new lease with the Sarasota Family YMCA, which means reduced entry fees for the aquatic center located at Potter Park for non-YMCA members. 
Motorists are urged to use caution as construction work on the Myakka River Bridge is slated to begin this week, with the project eyed for completion in Spring 2017.

Change in plan at Publix Center at Bee Ridge Extension

From Sarasota County:
We stated in last week’s Project Update (see attached) the entrance off of Bee Ridge Road to the Publix would be closed this week, but the exit would be open. This would need to happen for connection to the utility infrastructure. However when the contractor started digging this morning, they found out that the waterline was not where it was shown on the plans. Therefore they are going to have to dig up a larger area.

In order to shorten the duration of this closure, they will need to close the entire entrance/exit on Bee Ridge Road. The patrons of the Publix shopping center will need to use the entrance/exit off of Bee Ridge Extension. Hopefully, the closure will only last for one week.

Public Info about University Interchange Project July 23rd


Public Information Meeting
I-75 (SR 93) / University Parkway
Diverging Diamond Interchange Construction Project


Sarasota/Bradenton, FL – The Florida Department of Transportation is hosting a public information meeting from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Keiser University located at 6151 Lake Osprey Drive in Sarasota.


The public may arrive anytime between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. andview an animation of the project design and talk one-on-one with project staff about the I-75/University Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) project. There will be no formal presentation.

Construction begins in August 2015 with completion in fall 2017.


Improvements being made as part of this project consist of constructing a diverging diamond interchange, adding an auxiliary lane on northbound and southbound I-75, constructing new bridges on I-75 over University Pkwy., widening of University Pkwy., widening of I-75 bridges over Erie Creek and Foley Creek, realignment of on-ramps and off-ramps at I-75/University Pkwy., addition of ponds, drainage improvements, new lighting and signalization, construction of a noise wall on the west side of I-75, sidewalks, bike lanes, and pedestrian walkways.


The Florida Department of Transportation solicits public participation without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability or family status. A traveling exhibit of works by famed Spanish artist Salvador Dali is on display at North Sarasota Library through the end of July.
Jacaranda Boulevard traffic will be reduced to two lanes starting Monday, July 13, as a major construction project begins, according to Sarasota County Public Works staff.
We are two months into the 2015 hurricane season, Sarasota County Emergency Management reminds you now is the time to prepare for a hurricane. Have a plan, have your kit ready and remember "the first 72 are on you."
Could your neighborhood pride use a boost? If so, you should consider applying for up to $10,000 in matching Neighborhood Grants, which are available through Sarasota County's Office of Neighborhood Services.
