Help our little park

On Saturday, our pocket park could use a little help. Come out to Hina Park on Saturday, Feb. 25th at 9 a.m.  Hina Park is the little park where Palau and Hina come together. Neighbors will be replacing rotted wood posts and doing some planting and mulching.   For the facelift, folks have already arranged for the materials. Please bring a rake, a shovel, a post hole maker if you happen to have.  Bring water and a hat and gloves. Hope to see you Saturday at 9 am!

Pics from Saturday's Hina Park Fix-Up

Image
After learning that we still had a bit of money left from a County grant from a few years ago, we contacted the County and asked about it. Turned out there was enough there to buy some mulch, some posts, some epoxy and a few other things to give Hina Park a bit of a makeover. Thanks to all who turned out to help -- including Preston, Logan, Zack, Josh, and Sawyer --  a great bunch of kids from the neighborhood. And thanks to Sarasota County Neighborhood Services, and in particular to Grants Coordinator Kathlyn Clayton (who alas is leaving her position) for going beyond the call of duty to make this a success!

The group -- a non-profit, all-volunteer association that collects no dues and does not impose deed restrictions -- took the action at its regular Sept. 12th general meeting. Sarasota County is currently accepting applications for neighborhood grants for up to $10,000. Proposals must be in by November and those that are accepted for funding will hear in early 2014. The focus on Mauna Loa evolved over the course of a lengthy brainstorming session that considered other options. What made it most appealing was the potential to tie in the planting of attractive trees and plants along the length of Mauna Loa with the prospective new landscaping that the County intends to install along Bee Ridge Road when that road is widened. The ide...
