Brief meeting report with a few upcoming events

It was great to see such a large group at our Jan. 26th 2017 neighborhood meeting! Thanks to everyone who took time to share their concerns and meet some new neighbors. Our group exists — to serve a social function — to serve an educational function — to beautify and unify the community Our next meeting is set for March 9, 7-8:30 pm . We’ll be electing officers. Please consider taking a leadership role in this all-volunteer group. We have two other upcoming events planned: -- A work day at Hina Point Park. Feb. 25th at 9 a.m. Hina Park is the little park where Palau and Hina come together. Neighbors will be replacing rotted wood posts and doing some planting and mulching. ( March 4 is the rain date.) The volunteer Lake Sarasota Community Group met Thursday - here's a brief summary of the meeting: Neighbors on Allan Place have expressed concerns about car lights, noise, bus noise, and exposure to Bee Ridge Rd. Meetings with the County are ongoing, and the some plans are in place for buffering. Further communication with the County and with SCAT is planned. The Board unanimously voted to send an LSCG letter regarding these matters to the County, to SCAT, and to the District 2 Commissioner. Bee Ridge roadwork is largely complete along the Lake Sarasota area, except for landscaping, which is scheduled to begin very soon. If you have any issues let us know - preferably via  NextDoor , or in comments, or at  lakesarasota@gmail.com . Major roadwork continues to the East, at Bent Tree and Iona, where a fourth roundabout is underway. Sheriff...

Letter from the Chair of the Lake Sarasota Community Group

Dear Neighbors, My name is Keith Russo. My wife, Sommer, and our boys love this neighborhood. That is why I volunteered to be considered for and was elected chairman by the members of the Lake Sarasota Community Group. Hence why I am now using this ID, rather than my personal one. First, LSCG is not an HOA, as many of you may know. We are not interested in regulating your lives. We are a   volunteer group open to all Lake Sarasota residents that are invested in our neighborhood and its safety and well-being. As such, this group has advocated on behalf of our community to local and county officials, kept the community informed of events and news that affect us, and coordinated community activities. Certain community members, like Tom Matrullo, should be applauded for doing a great deal to help us all. I am committed to continuing LSCG's tradition of advocating for your concerns and building community in every respect. We have noticed that many people have concerns about our neighbor...

What neighborhood grants can do

Image
Sarasota County Grants Coordinator Kathlyn Clayton sent a follow-up email after our last Lake Sarasota Community Group meeting - (Thanks Kathlyn!). Here it is: A gentleman asked for a list of the types of projects that have been funded [through County grants]. Here is a sample: Landscaping Website Development Entryway signs Removal of invasive plants Shoreline restoration Water quality projects Install micro-irrigation Yard of the Month signs Neighborhood watch signs The same gentleman asked me why it ‘s a good idea to have an association. Here are some examples: Unity and communication that allows for a voice and influence into what happens in surrounding areas Sense of community Neighbors watch out for neighbors  Provides a channel through which neighborhood goals can be met A voice in development/land use issues Deal with crime and other disturbances as a unified group Hope the above is helpful.

Highlights of the June Quarterly meeting of the Lake Sarasota Community Group (LSCG): 1. Representatives of TerraCap Mgmt Inc. told the LSCG board and members of the community that they could be open to a "Declaration of Covenants and Restrictions" modeled upon that employed at the Publix Plaza at Bee Ridge Extension. A rough draft of a Declaration for the Bee Ridge Park of Commerce will be drawn up and shared with the Community for comment and feedback before further talks are held. The purpose is to identify legally binding constraints that would protect Lake Sarasota residences from noise, glare, and other potential nuisances, as well as produce an appealing upscale commercial center. 2. Plans were made to rescue the Lake Sarasota signs at the entrance at Mauna Loa. The task proved easier than expected, and the signs are now in safe keeping. The concern was that they might be lost once the Bee Ridge road widening begins. If a child reports that they were stolen, plea...

Entrance Sign Agreement: Questions

Image
Anyone in Lake Sarasota familiar with legal and/or liability issues for property? Our community is being offered a new signature sign for our entrance that will be placed on an easement at Mauna Loa and Bee Ridge after the widening of Bee Ridge road is complete. We need to evaluate options regarding future responsibility for the care, upkeep, and liability issues of the sign. Liability: E.g.: If a car hits the sign, (1) who pays for the repair/replacement of the sign? and, (2) If someone in the car is hurt from hitting the sign, who can be liable? Maintenance: For safety reasons, the County has prohibited residents from working on the medians of Mauna Loa. Would this apply to the landscaping area around the new sign? If so, then what landscaping will be allowed, and who will maintain it? If you have expertise and would like to help our Volunteer Board evaluate options, you can reach us at lakesarasota@gmail.com - thanks! Sample Entrance Sign
