MEET HERE!  PLAY HERE!  Sarasota County – Something for everyone!, is an initiative of Sarasota County government to inform the public of the many great events, activities and things to do for free or at little cost, here in your community.

Summer is here, and so are hundreds of opportunities to have fun in the sun! For example; in June you can attend a beach run or learn how to get prepared for hurricane season. To find about more information on these and the many other events taking place in June check out the calendar of events at http://www.sarasotafl.org. With so many events to choose from, you are sure to find something to enjoy!

Now is a great time to rediscover your Sarasota community. Become revitalized, rejuvenated and inspired by an enduring spirit of engagement and involvement. Sarasota County is the best place to live, learn, work and play! We are proud to provide you these opportunities and invite you to participate in the following upcoming featured events taking place during the month of June:

 

Tuesday, June 2

What: Kids' Summer Beach Runs at Siesta Key Beach

When: 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM (Weekly)

Where: Siesta Key Beach - Main Pavilion, 948 Beach Rd.

Description: This is a one mile fun run for kids of all ages. Weekly registration held at 5:30 p.m. with race time at 6:30 p.m. Runs will take place every Tuesday evening from June 2 to August 18. The runs are a great opportunity for families to get exercise and have lots of fun at this beautiful beach. Registration is held on-site, and participants will receive a ribbon with every run. T-shirts are earned after four runs are completed. There is a 1 time, $1 registration fee.

Wednesday, June 3

What: Free Emergency Preparedness Conference for People with Disabilities

When: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Where: Sudakoff Center at New College 5700 N. Tamiami Trail

Who should attend: People with Disabilities and Senior Citizens, their Families and Caregivers, Organizations that provide services to People with Disabilities, State and Local Government, Local Businesses

Description: Experts from local, private and government agencies will discuss what to expect – and not expect – during the time surrounding a disaster or emergency situation. Participants will learn how to be proactive, not reactive, to emergencies: preparation can make the difference before, during and after a disaster. This free conference will feature speakers and panelists experienced in emergency management, exhibitors, lunch and personal disaster survival plans! You must register in advance.

Thursday, June 4

What: Birding for Beginners on the South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve

When: 7:30 -10 a.m.

Where: South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve

Description: Explore South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve with enthusiastic birder, Nancy Edmondson, Environmental Specialist with Sarasota County Natural Resources in search of the summer resident birds. Beginning birders will learn basic clues and investigative tips for finding and identifying birds in the wild or in your garden. Binoculars are a must to bring!

On the bottom of each nature walk is an area that states 'Click here for registration.' Space for this walk is limited to 12 (for an optimal birding experience!). What: Termites!

When: 2 – 4 p.m.

Where: Shamrock Park & Nature Center Classroom, 3900 Shamrock Drive, Venice, FL 34293

Description: If you live long enough in Florida, you will probably have termites in your home. Dr. Fred Santana, Entomologist will discuss basic termite biology and behavior, their impact on homes, various approaches that are available to control termites and steps the homeowner can take to discourage their presence. This is a two-hour class.

What: Summertime Wildflowers

When: 9 -11 a.m.

Where: Manasota Scrub Preserve, 2695 Bridge St., Englewood

Description: Enjoy an easy walk at Englewood’s Manasota Scrub Preserve, Wednesday, June 24, from 9-11 a.m.  Amateur botanists and Florida Native Plant Society members Denny Girard & Al Squires will share with other plant enthusiasts the summertime wildflowers. Who knows? There may be an unscheduled discovery of a new species!
