Real or Fake?

This picture is from the archives of Sunshine Springs and Gardens, the original resort on Lake Sarasota, back when the lake was first built. The resort was a sales device to promote -- what else -- real estate. The question: Is the elephant real?

The story I have come across is that an elephant act like this was real, but tragically an
elephant drowned, so the act was stopped
We have heard that story too. Would love to find out if true.

I find the picture of the elephant so incredibly sad. That poor animal must have felt so much fear, what an incredibly cruel thing to do.
