Fire Prevention Open House is hot!
SATURDAY: Bring the entire family to the Sarasota County Fire Department's annual Open House, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Fire demonstrations, clowns, face painting, games and fire trucks. It all takes place at Fire Station 5, 400 N. Beneva Road, Sarasota. 

Osprey-Vamo cleanup set for Oct. 6
SATURDAY: Sarasota County will hold its annual free community cleanup in the Osprey and Vamo area from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Dumpsters will be provided by Waste Management and will be available at three locations for refuse from residents.

Mowing schedule for Oct. 1-13
Here is the schedule for Sarasota County's roadside mowing and median maintenance program for Oct. 1-13, subject to weather conditions.

Red tide moving offshore
Sarasota County is scheduling cleanups for Blind Pass Beach and Manasota Beach after fish began washing up on shore on Wednesday. County health officials suspect a red tide bloom in the gulf off of Charlotte County is the cause.

Hope for Homeowners seminar Oct. 9
If you think you may be in danger of losing your home, don't ignore the problem. Join the community conversation about the housing crisis at Selby Library from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 9.

Libraries closing Oct. 8 for training
All Sarasota County libraries will be closed Monday, Oct. 8, while employees participate in training. Access to outside book returns will not be affected by the closure; and borrowed items may be returned. 

BMX rolls in again Oct. 12-15 
BMX racers ages 2-5 from around the world will compete for a world title at the 2012 Strider World Championships.

Mobile health services in October
The Health Department's Health In Motion Mobile Medical Unit staff will provide free and low-cost health services at 13 sites around the county during October.

Time to get your thumb green again
Sarasota County Master Gardeners holds their 8th Annual Plant Sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Bee Ridge Park, 4430 Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota. In case of rain, the event will move to Oct. 14. Admission is free.

County launches Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan wiki 
Sarasota County wants your input and comments on the draft Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The wiki will be open for review and comment starting Monday, Oct.1. It will close Dec. 31. 

Voter registration hours extended
Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections offices will remain open until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, which is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 General Election. Staff will accept new voter registrations, address and name changes and signature updates.
