If you have not yet paid your 2016 property taxes, don't let the Friday, March 31 deadline pass or you will face an additional charge.
Big trucks and two egg hunts are in store for kids at the 21st annual Big Truck Day EGGstravaganza, sponsored by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources.
Venice Library, 260 N. Nokomis Ave., will be closed Friday, April 7, while the City of Venice performs maintenance on the building.
Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources is taking part in the "Meet Me at the Park" initiative, a national contest that could earn Sarasota County a $20,000 grant to improve local parks.
If you're facing an outstanding overdue fine that's been keeping you away from the library, take advantage of Amnesty Week at any Sarasota County Library by returning those overdue items without penalty.
The Sarasota County recognizes the value in measuring health outcomes using a variety of  data tools.
The Sarasota County elections office has begun sending out vote-by-mail (absentee) ballots for the May 9 municipal elections.
The county is seeking the public's input as it creates a Unified Development Code that updates and brings together the land development and zoning regulations, which control the development of all properties in unincorporated Sarasota County.
Summer is right around the corner, and Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources has plenty of summer camp options this year to keep kids entertained and engaged.
The Sarasota County Department of Health staff will provide no-cost health screenings and referrals for general health and wellness during April.

Please share this with your Lake Sarasota neighbors: On Tuesday July 18, an online Neighborhood Workshop will take place. It's about a new proposed set of high-rise condos on the sliver of wooded land between Lake Sarasota and I-75. The developer will be going to the County with a new plan for 208 (or possibly more) dwelling units on  24.5 acres, to be called West Bridge at Lake Sarasota. Access to the land will solely be possible through roads within Lake Sarasota. Two bridges to cross over the creek (which is part of the Phillippi Creek drainage area) will be constructed.  The image below is taken from  the full proposal . West Bridge meeting summary and next steps

  Dear Neighbors, Thanks to everyone who attended the LSCG meeting on 7/27. The information to be distributed is too much for a post or an email. Please, read the summary of the meeting and the next steps moving forward. If you wish to help or have questions, please email  keithcrusso@gmail.com Thanks. First, an open letter, then more details below. To no one’s surprise, the attendees of the Lake Sarasota Community Group meeting on July 27th unanimously decided to fight the new development proposed by developer Josh Graber and his agents. We are opposed to this type of development, not to the current zoning for single-family dwellings. No number of amenities or concessions offered by the developer in the neighborhood workshop were persuasive to the twenty-thirty people who came or attended via video last night.  The community  wanted me to share this message, too: please, know that this and other developments in the area will affect every one of us, from Molokai to Berkshire, From Jarv

Sarasota Baptist's planned development: Careless? Indifferent? Dangerous?

Update: On Nov. 28, 2023,  despite the absence of any traffic study. the Board of Sarasota County Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the Sarasota Baptist windfall proposal for 87 unaffordable homes on Hand Road.  Six people from the community offered several reasons that a rational judge would consider to be compelling, but not this Board. This commission reads the Comp Plan not as a set of strategies to prevent poor planning, but rather as a mandate to mindlessly approve growth. From the follow-up story in the Sarasota News Leader : The new homes will increase car trips from 66 to 847 daily on crippled Hand Road.  Commissioner Mark Smith noted Transportation staff had provided a chart in the report on the application showing that the daily number of trips on Hand Road linked to the existing zoning, Open Use Estate, was 66.
