Eco-Egg Hunt, Rothenbach Park, this Saturday

This Saturday, April 3, bring the kids out to the Rothenbach Park Eco-Egg Hunt.

Instead of eggs, we'll be picking up Air Potatoes from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. - bring the family!

  • wear socks and tennis shoes
  • have some pink lemonade
  • kids will win candy for their efforts.

Air potatoes are an invasive plant that harms native vegetation and disrupts native habitat. This event is designed as a fun way for young and old to give back to your community.

At Rothenbach Park, 8350 Bee Ridge Road

Take Bee Ridge east past I-75, until it dead ends at Rothenbach Park. Continue into the park, past the gate, turn right and park in the playground/shelter area.

March 11th LSCG Meeting

The Lake Sarasota Community Group met Thursday evening at a new location that everyone seemed pretty happy with, Sarasota Alliance Church, 7221 Bee Ridge Rd. The group decided to hold its meeting there next month, again on the second Thursday, April 8.

Highlights:

1. Citizens Patrol is more necessary than ever.

Incidents doubled from January to February. A particular crime hot spot is 4100 block of Lancaster. There was also a break-in on Luwanna - Ted was still waiting to receive the latest Sheriff's report.

Ted has requested more Sheriff's patrols here, especially between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., and says the Sheriff says they'll do that.

"We do need folks to volunteer for Citizens Patrol," said Ted. Call him (379-0758) or email him at TCover6161@aol.com.

2. Yard of the Month signs keep disappearing - three new signs will be ordered, for a total of $75. People are also checking on costs of obtaining new meeting signs.

3. Sue Whetzel from County Parks and Rec introduced herself and brought us up to date on Lakeview Park and the Dog Park. An aeration windmill was installed to drive air into the canal and pond, to help with water quality. She also  invited input on what projects might be worthwhile for both Lakeview and its dog park.

Among items mentioned:
  • Surveillance cams at the Pavilion area - that's already in the works, Sue says.
  • Possibly a walking trail?
  •  Dog exercise and play things for the dog park?
Let us know if you have some ideas: lakesarasota@gmail.com

4. Sandy needs volunteers to hand out maps during Saturday's garage sale. She has also placed ads both in the paper and on craigslist.

She described a few possible ways to combine networking and fundraising for the neighborhood, e.g., Dining to Donate events at local restaurants such as Appleby's and Chili's.

There are several other events coming in April and May -- see more info here.

5. Ray and Connie talked about work they're doing with Friends of Sarasota County Parks (FOSCP), including helping get volunteers for upcoming parks events.

At Rothenbach Park, there's an Eco-Egg Hunt April 3, from 9:15 a.m. - bring kids to help hunt for "Eggs," which will actually be the nefarious Air Potato seeds. There will be prizes, naturally. There's a grown-up hunt scheduled for the weekend before as well - click for more.

At Benderson Park, several upcoming Regattas (April 9, April 23-25, May 7-9) will need volunteers to help with parking and various tasks. Contact Connie at rothenbachpark05@gmail.com to get involved, meet people, and develop some mutually reciprocal relations with other volunteers around the county. You'll also find out how Regattas could be a big economic windfall for Sarasota.

6. Tisha and others are considering doing some beautification at the entrances and on Mauna Loa, possibly on April 17, which is the Great American Clean-Up

Also: Don't forget to set your clocks ahead this Sunday a.m. - Daylight Savings begins.
