Spring Fling: April 15th

This year April 15 is not Tax Day (anyway, it's April 16th this year). It was to be the date of the second annual Lake Sarasota Spring Fling - now it's' on May 6th.

Time: Sunday, May 6, 1 - 4 p.m.
Place: Pavilion on the Lake.
Band: Skyline
Food: Burgers, hot dogs, lemonade, potato salad, etc.

Everyone is asked to bring a chair and a dish.

Games for Kids:

  • Bean bag
  • Egg toss
  • Ring toss
  • Balloon toss
  • Apple Bobbing
  • Sack races
  • Face painting
  • Cards
  • Board games (feel free to bring yours)

The Raffle will have several prizes – gift baskets with themes – movies, wine and cheese, gardening, coffee, bath and spa.



A representative from the Sheriff will conduct a Citizens Patrol training session, or two if there is sufficient interest. The first group will meet at 1:30 p.m. for about 45 minutes. If warranted, a second training session will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Tentative:

  • A county forester or arborist might be on hand to talk about the various plants and trees in the park.
  • A representative from the county’s stormwater dept. might be on hand to talk about the lakes and canals, water quality and how to improve it.


*Rain date (only if absolutely necessary): May 6th.

A couple of more dates to put on your calendar:
  • The next community-wide Yard Sale will be Saturday May 19th.
  • The next community clean-up - with the county providing dumpsters - will be Saturday July 28th.

It's about a new proposed set of high-rise condos on the sliver of wooded land between Lake Sarasota and I-75. The developer will be going to the County with a new plan for 208 (or possibly more) dwelling units on  24.5 acres, to be called West Bridge at Lake Sarasota. Access to the land will solely be possible through roads within Lake Sarasota. Two bridges to cross over the creek (which is part of the Phillippi Creek drainage area) will be constructed.  The image below is taken from  the full proposal . West Bridge meeting summary and next steps

  Dear Neighbors, Thanks to everyone who attended the LSCG meeting on 7/27. The information to be distributed is too much for a post or an email. Please, read the summary of the meeting and the next steps moving forward. If you wish to help or have questions, please email  keithcrusso@gmail.com Thanks. First, an open letter, then more details below. To no one’s surprise, the attendees of the Lake Sarasota Community Group meeting on July 27th unanimously decided to fight the new development proposed by developer Josh Graber and his agents. We are opposed to this type of development, not to the current zoning for single-family dwellings. Sarasota Baptist's planned development: Careless? Indifferent? Dangerous?

Update: On Nov. 28, 2023,  despite the absence of any traffic study. the Board of Sarasota County Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the Sarasota Baptist windfall proposal for 87 unaffordable homes on Hand Road.  Six people from the community offered several reasons that a rational judge would consider to be compelling, but not this Board. This commission reads the Comp Plan not as a set of strategies to prevent poor planning, but rather as a mandate to mindlessly approve growth. From the follow-up story in the Sarasota News Leader : The new homes will increase car trips from 66 to 847 daily on crippled Hand Road.  Commissioner Mark Smith noted Transportation staff had provided a chart in the report on the application showing that the daily number of trips on Hand Road linked to the existing zoning, Open Use Estate, was 66.
