Beat the high gas prices and commute to work on SCAT's new Express bus service between North Port and downtown Sarasota. Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) will debut its new Express bus service on Monday, April 25.
  
With local gas prices nearing $4 per gallon, SCAT's new Express service will provide commuters between North Port and downtown Sarasota with an affordable transportation option. For just $2.50 one way or $5 round trip, a rider can make the 70-minute, one-way trip with limited stops between North Port and Sarasota.  (MORE)
Shelter dogAnimal Services Spring Adopt-a-thon
Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Animal Services will hold its spring Adopt-a-thon this Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  
Animal Services is located at 8451 Bee Ridge Road, east of I-75 across from Rothenbach Park.
  
During the event, animal lovers can meet dogs, cats, puppies andShelter Catkittens that are available for adoption at significantly reduced fees.
  
Adoptive parents will receive a "starter kit" with food, treats and other useful items.
  
The event will also be a celebration to honor the shelter's many volunteers and to introduce citizens to volunteer opportunities at Animal Services.

Voting began Friday, April 15, for the six candidates of the 2011 "One Book, One Community" program sponsored by the Sarasota County Library System in coordination with National Library Week. Paper ballots and online voting at www.onebooksarasota.com  will extend through Sunday, May 22. (MORE)

Friends of Sarasota County Parks and Sarasota County Parks and Recreation have a limited number of slots left available for the Adopt-A-Camper Golf Scramble scheduled 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Heron Creek Golf and Country Club, 3401 South Sumter Blvd., North Port. UF Extension ServicesSarasota County Extension Service wants your input on long-range planning for state program
The Florida Cooperative Extension System is conducting a planning process that will shape Extension programs in Florida for the next decade. This joint effort of the University of Florida (UF) and the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) will allow us to have a clear path of action as an educational organization to support Florida's economy, environment, and people that is relevant and flexible to meet the changing needs of Florida's communities.

Listening will be at the core of Extension's long range planning effort. UF/IFAS Sarasota County Extension would like your input to identify educational programming priorities and future directions for Extension as part of a state and local planning initiative. Please take 10 minutes to let us know how we can improve the Extension program by completing thissurvey.

In addition to this survey, Sarasota County Extension will be holding a listening session on Thursday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at Twin Lakes Park. Register online for this event by Friday, May 6, or by calling Sarasota County Extension at 941-861-9900.

It's about a new proposed set of high-rise condos on the sliver of wooded land between Lake Sarasota and I-75. The developer will be going to the County with a new plan for 208 (or possibly more) dwelling units on  24.5 acres, to be called West Bridge at Lake Sarasota. Access to the land will solely be possible through roads within Lake Sarasota. Two bridges to cross over the creek (which is part of the Phillippi Creek drainage area) will be constructed.  The image below is taken from  the full proposal .   Dear Neighbors, Thanks to everyone who attended the LSCG meeting on 7/27. The information to be distributed is too much for a post or an email. Please, read the summary of the meeting and the next steps moving forward. If you wish to help or have questions, please email  keithcrusso@gmail.com Thanks. First, an open letter, then more details below. To no one’s surprise, the attendees of the Lake Sarasota Community Group meeting on July 27th unanimously decided to fight the new development proposed by developer Josh Graber and his agents. We are opposed to this type of development, not to the current zoning for single-family dwellings. No number of amenities or concessions offered by the developer in the neighborhood workshop were persuasive to the twenty-thirty people who came or attended via video last night.  The community  wanted me to share this message, too: please, know that this and other developments in the area will affect every one of us, from Molokai to Berkshire, From Jarv

Sarasota Baptist's planned development: Careless? Indifferent? Dangerous?

Update: On Nov. 28, 2023,  despite the absence of any traffic study. the Board of Sarasota County Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the Sarasota Baptist windfall proposal for 87 unaffordable homes on Hand Road.  Six people from the community offered several reasons that a rational judge would consider to be compelling, but not this Board. This commission reads the Comp Plan not as a set of strategies to prevent poor planning, but rather as a mandate to mindlessly approve growth. From the follow-up story in the Sarasota News Leader : The new homes will increase car trips from 66 to 847 daily on crippled Hand Road.  Commissioner Mark Smith noted Transportation staff had provided a chart in the report on the application showing that the daily number of trips on Hand Road linked to the existing zoning, Open Use Estate, was 66. That figure was attributed to data found in the 11th edition of the Institute of Traffic Engineers (ITE) manual, which the Transportation staff uses as its prima
