Sarasota County has earned the Keep America Beautiful President's Circle Award for the 14th year, a designation that recognizes exemplary performance by certified communities in creating clean, green and
beautiful communities.
A section of Palmer Boulevard between Iona Road and just to the east of Talon Lane/Gerry Road will be closed to traffic until March 20.
Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner reminds residents of the City of North Port, City of Sarasota, and Town of Longboat Key to register to vote by Feb. 13 to be eligible to vote in the March 14 elections.
The Sarasota County elections office mailed 10,417 vote-by-mail (absentee) ballots for the March 14 municipal elections. 
Free tax aid is available at locations throughout Sarasota County for filing federal income tax returns at AARP tax aid sites and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites.
It's time to clean out the garage and gather discarded household items, junk and yard waste, as Sarasota County holds its annual free community cleanup in the Nokomis area from 8 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The Florida Department of Health and Sarasota County Schools have launched a school-based dental sealant program designed to stop tooth decay (cavities) and the associated dental and health problems.
The deadline to file for a homestead exemption, a property tax benefit available to eligible homeowners, is March 1. Homeowners can receive a homestead exemption of up to $50,000 on the assessed value of
their properties.

Please share this with your Lake Sarasota neighbors: On Tuesday July 18, an online Neighborhood Workshop will take place. It's about a new proposed set of high-rise condos on the sliver of wooded land between Lake Sarasota and I-75. The developer will be going to the County with a new plan for 208 (or possibly more) dwelling units on  24.5 acres, to be called West Bridge at Lake Sarasota. Access to the land will solely be possible through roads within Lake Sarasota. Two bridges to cross over the creek (which is part of the Phillippi Creek drainage area) will be constructed.  The image below is taken from  the full proposal . West Bridge meeting summary and next steps

  Dear Neighbors, Thanks to everyone who attended the LSCG meeting on 7/27. The information to be distributed is too much for a post or an email. Please, read the summary of the meeting and the next steps moving forward. If you wish to help or have questions, please email  keithcrusso@gmail.com Thanks. First, an open letter, then more details below. To no one’s surprise, the attendees of the Lake Sarasota Community Group meeting on July 27th unanimously decided to fight the new development proposed by developer Josh Graber and his agents. We are opposed to this type of development, not to the current zoning for single-family dwellings. No number of amenities or concessions offered by the developer in the neighborhood workshop were persuasive to the twenty-thirty people who came or attended via video last night.  The community  wanted me to share this message, too: please, know that this and other developments in the area will affect every one of us, from Molokai to Berkshire, From Jarv

Sarasota Baptist's planned development: Careless? Indifferent? Dangerous?

Update: On Nov. 28, 2023,  despite the absence of any traffic study. the Board of Sarasota County Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the Sarasota Baptist windfall proposal for 87 unaffordable homes on Hand Road.  Six people from the community offered several reasons that a rational judge would consider to be compelling, but not this Board. This commission reads the Comp Plan not as a set of strategies to prevent poor planning, but rather as a mandate to mindlessly approve growth. From the follow-up story in the Sarasota News Leader : The new homes will increase car trips from 66 to 847 daily on crippled Hand Road.  Commissioner Mark Smith noted Transportation staff had provided a chart in the report on the application showing that the daily number of trips on Hand Road linked to the existing zoning, Open Use Estate, was 66.
