Community Meeting Update

A summary of the Lake Sarasota Community Group meeting of Sept. 11, 2014.

Treasurer’s report - the group has $297 and no debts. It voted unanimously to renew membership in CONA Sarasota.

Update on Bee Ridge roadwork: Speed limit remains 35 mph throughout the duration of the project. Police are actively enforcing the limit.

Racetrac has begun work on its gas station at Mauna Loa Blvd. and Bee Ridge Rd. opposite the entrance to Lake Sarasota. The station will have 20 bays and a large store footprint.

Racetrac construction

TerraCap and the Bee Ridge Park of Commerce: TerraCap requested and received a postponement of its petitioned rezoning for the 50-acre plot at the north side Mauna Loa and Bee Ridge Rd. to allow time to meet with neighborhood representatives who are seeking a legally binding covenant to limit impacts on traffic and nuisance issues (bright lights, noise at night, etc). The rezoning will be heard at the County on Nov. 4. Representatives of residents will meet with TerraCap in the interim.

2050 Plan update. The County has one more hearing coming in October on amendments to the 2050 plan. The new amendments were mostly promoted by developers and builders who feel the Plan makes it too costly or restrictive to build East of I-75. Environmentalists and those who value the rural character east of I-75 say the proposed changes will compromise the Plan and unleash rapid, large-scale development.

Rothenbach Park Initiative. The Group heard about an initiative to plant trees and buffering foliage in Rothenbach Park.

Dragon Boat Racing. The Group heard about the rowing event featuring teams from around the world, all breast cancer survivors. It's coming to Nathan Benderson Park the weekend of Oct. 24-26, and they are seeking Ambassadors to help teams find what they need while visiting. More here.

Fall Neighborhood Garage Sale: A committee was formed to work on a garage sale for Saturday, Nov. 15th, possibly to include a bake sale to raise funds for the LSCG.

The Sheriff’s report will be posted when available.

Neighborhood Grants: The Group discussed four different projects, perhaps with the help of neighborhood school children, that could qualify for a Neighborhood Grant from Sarasota County:
  • Walkway from Mauna Loa to Lakeview School
  • Hina Park Fix-up
  • Luzon Butterfly Garden
  • Bicycle Racks at bus stops
County Grants Coordinator Kathlyn Clayton will be invited to the next meeting, which is scheduled for Dec. 11, 2014, 7 pm at Sarasota Alliance. Bring your ideas!

Keep up with these issues on the
