Sales Tax Vote Tues. Nov. 6

The local sales tax expires Aug. 31, 2009.

The Sarasota County Council of Neighborhood Associations, or CONA, voted last week not to endorse the tax extension. The position was taken mainly because of the group's dispute with the Sarasota County School Board, which has not raised school impact fees in three years and is largely relying on the sales tax to pay for new school construction. HOW THE QUESTION WILL APPEAR ON NOV. 6 BALLOTS:

REFERENDUM TO CONTINUE THE SALES TAX AND THE CITIZEN TAX OVERSIGHT COMMITTEES

Shall ordinance 2007-087 be approved continuing the one-cent sales tax through December 31, 2024 to fund community projects, including transportation, parks, beaches, dredging, libraries, criminal justice facilities, general government, museum, transit, sidewalks, environment, water and sewer, stormwater, solid waste, affordable housing,, neighborhoods, health systems, public safety, public schools; establishing county economic development trust fund; providing continuance of sales tax by referendum; requiring 4/5's vote to modify county projects/allocations; continuing citizen tax oversight committees?

YES FOR continuing the 1-cent sales tax

NO AGAINST continuing the 1-cent sales tax

It's about a new proposed set of high-rise condos on the sliver of wooded land between Lake Sarasota and I-75. The developer will be going to the County with a new plan for 208 (or possibly more) dwelling units on  24.5 acres, to be called West Bridge at Lake Sarasota. Access to the land will solely be possible through roads within Lake Sarasota. West Bridge meeting summary and next steps

  Dear Neighbors, Thanks to everyone who attended the LSCG meeting on 7/27. The information to be distributed is too much for a post or an email. Please, read the summary of the meeting and the next steps moving forward. If you wish to help or have questions, please email  keithcrusso@gmail.com Thanks. First, an open letter, then more details below. To no one’s surprise, the attendees of the Lake Sarasota Community Group meeting on July 27th unanimously decided to fight the new development proposed by developer Josh Graber and his agents. We are opposed to this type of development, not to the current zoning for single-family dwellings. No number of amenities or concessions offered by the developer in the neighborhood workshop were persuasive to the twenty-thirty people who came or attended via video last night.  The community  wanted me to share this message, too: please, know that this and other developments in the area will affect every one of us, from Molokai to Berkshire, From Jarv

Sarasota Baptist's planned development: Careless? Indifferent? Dangerous?

Update: On Nov. 28, 2023,  despite the absence of any traffic study. the Board of Sarasota County Commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the Sarasota Baptist windfall proposal for 87 unaffordable homes on Hand Road.  Six people from the community offered several reasons that a rational judge would consider to be compelling, but not this Board. This commission reads the Comp Plan not as a set of strategies to prevent poor planning, but rather as a mandate to mindlessly approve growth. From the follow-up story in the Sarasota News Leader : The new homes will increase car trips from 66 to 847 daily on crippled Hand Road.  Commissioner Mark Smith noted Transportation staff had provided a chart in the report on the application showing that the daily number of trips on Hand Road linked to the existing zoning, Open Use Estate, was 66.
